About a month after Cocoa started back-riding outside of the
nesting box, we noticed that Ginger would often leave her alone for
an hour or more. Cocoa would make little distressed noises and seem
uncertain, but she'd eventually try climbing across different
branches, trying to get closer to her mother. She would seem relieved
when Ginger would finally come back for her. Cocoa would eagerly
climb on her mother's back. Sometimes they would do a little nose-sniffing
thing first, and seem affectionate with each other, like it
was a happy reunion.
Eventually, we often could not see Cocoa when Ginger left her on
her own. Cocoa may have become more adept at concealing herself or
finding her own possum things to do.
