The photo on this page was taken on August 30th, 2007, the night
before Cocoa died. Kwila appears on the right.
We wanted Cocoa to live a long, healthy, happy possum life, but
we were aware that possum existence is difficult and uncertain, and
that anything could happen at any time. Accidents like the one that
happened to Cocoa are common.
If you find an injured native animal, take it to a vet or call the
nearest all-hours vet. Certain animals, like possums, may be calm
enough to be picked up if they are covered, (including their
heads), with a towel or blanket and placed in a box, but some other
animals may be dangerous. You will not have to pay for the animal's
care costs.
We certainly did not want Cocoa to die, but it was a relief to be
able to find her, to have the resolution/closure of knowing what had
happened to her, and to ensure her suffering was not prolonged.
Cocoa will be missed.
