In June 2013, Russia's Federal Assembly passed a law banning
"propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations". Apparently minors
must be protected from "homosexual propaganda." Fines or jail time
are given to citizens who disseminate information that may cause a
"distorted understanding" that LGBT and heterosexual relationships
are "socially equivalent." Fines are significantly higher if such
information is spread on the internet.
According to that law, I guess I would be fined because of some
things I have posted on my website.
I realize that when celebrities or those with political power out
themselves, they might be derailing their careers. We know of some
celebrities who are out, but the reality is probably that the
majority of those who would come out would suffer discrimination.
There is a signficant danger for many individuals, as well. Violence
is not a thing of the past when it comes to LGBTI issues.
Australia had a chance to take a stand on this issue in the September
7 election, but did not elect any of the parties that support
same-sex marriage equality. I was disappointed, and even somewhat
surprised.
