unidentified spider

I don't know what the name of this spider is. GK says that in reality it looked hairier - the flash has obscured some details. He photographed this spider in 2004. Large, scary-looking spiders are common here. When walking through a garden, park or forested area day or night, it is a good idea to look out for spiderwebs, because it is possible to walk right into one unaware. [However, personal experience has shown that large spiders like this one don't seem to bite or attack if a person becomes entangled in a web. You would probably have to seriously hurt or scare the spider to make it behave aggressively.]
